An important scene in The Bad Beginning is when Count Olaf tried to make Violet marry him in his backyard. “Klaus watched his sister in her wedding gown take her place next to Count Olaf as the curtain rose.” (36) This scene is important because if Count Olaf would have gotten to marry Violet he would have gotten his hands on the Baudelaire fortune. It creates complications in the conflict because it stops Olaf from getting what he wants. It shows Olafs characteristic of greedy and evil. When Violet does something very smart and ruins his whole plan Count Olaf gets furious. “ “Like most people,” Violet said, “I am right-handed. But I signed the document with my left hand.” “(39) This scene takes place in the climax of the story. This scene was one of the biggest plot twist in the series.
The main conflict in The Bad Beginning is the 3 siblings being chased around by the evil Count Olaf. The conflict started when a the Baudelaires mansion was caught on fire and killed their parents. After they became orphans and have had to go from foster parent to foster parent, the first foster parent was Count Olaf and all he wanted was money. This is the main reason of the book, Lemony Snicket wrote it about the orphans having to get away from Olaf. Violet always has some invention to get them out of their problem or situation. Klaus is a bookworm and always knows what words/codes means. Sunny bites things and if they are fighting someone or have to get out of being tied up she bites them out. The conflict is external and it is situational. The main characters of this book are Violet, Klaus, Sunny, Mr. Poe, and Count Olaf. They are important because through out the book series they are going through more and more problems. Violet is a quick thinker while Klaus is a book worm. Sunny is adventurous and Mr. Poe is clueless of everything that happens to these kids. Count Olaf is mischievous and sneaky. All the characters are static characters. "Violet and Sunny looked at Klaus. The biggest reader of the three, he was the most likely to know vocabulary words and foreign phrases"(65&66) "Count Olaf’s eyes grew very shiny, but he continued to smirk at Klaus." (98)
An important scene in the book is Tyler's house/apartment. His place comes into the story when Tyler saves Cady from the men from the cabin trying to kill her. It brings the men to his apartment causing Tyler's roommate to get worried and mad at Tyler for bringing a stranger into their home. Cady is shocked that he let her stay and gave her clothes and fed her. But she's also thankful that she's safe for the night so she acts as politely as she can. This scene take place during the Rising Action. "James (Tyler's roommate) gives me a nod, and then exchanges a wordless look with Tyler." (62) "He roots around in the chest of drawers-everything inside is neatly folded, which makes it clear just how little there is-and comes up with an oversized green nylon football shirt." (65) The question i have about this scene is, how did the bad men find her ?
The main conflict is that Cady got kidnapped and doesn't know anything. This is a problem because without her memory she doesn’t a clue of what she’s doing or where she’s going. She’s completely lost. Cady is trying her hardest to remember anything that would help her in that moment. She finally comes up with something because on pg. 8 it says, “All my moves were automatic.” The conflict is both internal and external. The conflict is sort of personal because it has to do with her parents. On pg. 144 it says, “ What does a disease carried by field mice have to do with men wanting to kill Cady ?” ”Because her parents have also figured out the other half.” This means that Cady’s parents have something to do with it.
The main characters are Cady (The girl who gets kidnapped) and Ty (the boy who helps her find her family again). Cady is important because the whole story is about her and her kidnapping. Ty is important because without his help Cady would’ve have never found her family. Cady is brave and fearless at time, in pg. 7 it says, “My right elbow drives back like a piston, landing square in his belly.” Ty is trustworthy and also brave because it says on pg. 60 he says, “I’m just saying come back to my place, one of us can spend the night on the couch, them in the morning we’ll try to figure something out.” Both characters have to be pretty brave and smart to be doing what they were doing. Cady is a dynamic character because she gets braver as the story continues. Ty is a static character because he is the same way in the story, he stays calm and a quick thinker to get them out of a problem.
